A Bachelor of Mathematics (Honours) significantly broadens career prospects and provides foundational training for roles as professional mathematicians or statisticians. This qualification also meets the prerequisites for advanced research programs like a Master of Philosophy or PhD.
The program develops versatile skills in analytical thinking, statistical interpretation, probability theory, mathematical simulations, supply chain management, and logical reasoning. With its adaptable structure, students can dedicate up to one-third of their coursework to other fields, enhancing future employment possibilities.
Financial support options include industry-sponsored scholarships, summer research grants, and faculty-supervised undergraduate projects. Students also benefit from Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) initiatives and cross-institutional courses through our Access Grid Room facilities.
The degree culminates with an in-depth thesis project in Mathematics or Statistics, guided by academic supervisors. Additional coursework can be selected from the School's offerings or AMSI programs, subject to approval by the Honours program coordinator.
To qualify for entry into Honours, students must have qualified at this University for a Bachelor degree with an average of at least 65% across the major (or majors) in which the Honours degree will be undertaken with the additional requirement of a Distinction in two of the 300 level subjects required by the major. Students considering an Honours degree are encouraged to talk to the Program Coordinator well in advance to seek approval for enrolment, discuss their program, and negotiate a thesis topic and supervisors.
