The Honours program offers an alternative pathway for students entering the second semester of their third year, whether they're enrolled in the standard Bachelor of Health and Physical Education or the Dean's Scholar version.
Participants can engage in a self-selected research project aligned with their interests or collaborate with faculty members on ongoing research initiatives. Each student receives dedicated supervision and must produce a comprehensive thesis documenting their research process, methodology, and outcomes. Completing the Honours program opens doors to advanced research opportunities at the postgraduate level.
Honours candidates are expected to:
Advance educational theory, research, and teaching methodologies
Undertake independent research culminating in a thesis, with additional opportunities for conference presentations and journal publications
Pursue research applications that meaningfully impact educational theory and practice
Engage actively with the School of Education's research community
The curriculum covers essential health and physical education topics such as motor skill development, sports instruction, dance education, health education (including mental health, relationships, and substance abuse), teaching methodologies, human biology, movement mechanics, and educational theory.
Complementary studies include Indigenous education, digital technologies, special needs education, research methods, interpersonal communication, and classroom management strategies.
The Honours year emphasizes developing research competencies characterized by academic rigor, professional ethics, and adherence to ethical guidelines, while remaining responsive to evolving research environments and contexts.
