Pursuing legal studies means grasping the vital role of social justice and leveraging legal frameworks to enhance societal and environmental wellbeing. It involves cultivating advanced legal expertise while recognizing how these skills can serve diverse objectives. By comprehending law as both a local and international phenomenon - including similarities across legal systems and how cultural contexts influence laws - you unlock pathways to varied legal careers in Australia and worldwide. At the University of Tasmania, legal education transcends conventional boundaries, blending academic study, research, and hands-on practice. Through our deep connections with Tasmania's legal community and extensive alumni network, you'll interact with judges, top legal professionals, government officials, and major legal organizations from your initial year. Our unique Tasmanian location offers unparalleled access to experts in Environmental, Antarctic, Marine, and Climate Law. The law school houses the Tasmanian Law Reform Institute, allowing students to participate in legal reforms, especially concerning criminal law. You'll also examine worldwide perspectives on contemporary issues like biotechnology regulation, gene-editing laws, and war crime prosecution. Our Bachelor of Laws program goes beyond teaching core legal principles - it integrates essential practical skills for success across legal, business, government, and community sectors, both in Tasmania and internationally. The curriculum provides numerous opportunities to hone advocacy, legal analysis, critical thinking, communication, research, ethical practice, collaboration, and self-evaluation skills. Upon completing the 3.5-year degree, graduates can immediately enroll in the six-month Tasmanian Legal Practice Course, potentially qualifying for legal practice in their graduation year.
