The Associate Degree in Arts is a two-year full-time program (or part-time equivalent) that enables students to analyze human culture and behavior through diverse viewpoints and historical contexts. This program encourages exploration of contemporary societal challenges while developing skills to contribute to humanity's social and economic progress, as well as fostering creative expression, performance, and innovation. The degree offers flexible pathways: it can serve as the foundation for a Bachelor of Arts, allow students to focus on two BA majors of interest, or provide the freedom to sample courses across multiple disciplines. With access to more than twenty potential majors and minors from the Bachelor of Arts program, plus numerous elective choices, students can customize their studies to broaden their knowledge and develop versatile skills.
From ancient civilizations to modern times, music has served as a vital component of rituals, spiritual practices, healing traditions, cultural identity, and leisure activities. Musical genres and styles have evolved in response to political shifts and social transformations, mirroring both individual artistic visions and collective influences from supporters, listeners, and the music business. In this major, students will examine the distinctive features and historical development of various musical traditions; evaluate how recording technologies affect both artists and audiences; analyze differing viewpoints among composers, performers, critics, and fans; and gain a comprehensive, interdisciplinary appreciation of music's evolving role in societies throughout history.
