The Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning prioritizes its research initiatives. Students can pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree within the school's dynamic research fields: Architecture, Architectural and Design Science, the Design Lab, and Urban and Regional Planning.
The University of Sydney and the school maintain robust research collaborations with leading institutions across Asia, Europe, Scandinavia, and North America. The Architecture, Design and Planning PhD program involves conducting research and composing a thesis spanning 50,000 to 80,000 words. Starting in 2021, Higher Degree by Research candidates must complete coursework components during their studies. Participants will have access to specialized study units (listed in Table R) tailored for research students. This selection offers diverse development opportunities, including specialized analytical techniques, professional training modules, and discipline-focused courses designed for research scholars.
