Our dual degree program offers high-achieving school graduates the opportunity to complete a three-year Bachelor of Science followed by a four-year Doctor of Medicine (MD). This comprehensive education provides a strong foundation in scientific principles essential for medical practice, equipping you for diverse career paths in medicine, from specialization to research and education. As a science undergraduate, you'll learn from distinguished academics, including Australian Academy of Science members, Australian Research Council Fellows, and recipients of prestigious awards like the Prime Minister's Prizes for Science and Eureka Prizes. You'll have access to state-of-the-art facilities such as the Sydney Nanoscience Hub and the Charles Perkins Centre, which focuses on diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular research. The MD program holds full accreditation from the Australian Medical Council, enabling graduates to obtain provisional registration for internships across Australia and New Zealand.
The study of infectious diseases examines the complex relationships between pathogens and their human hosts. The Infectious Diseases major offers an interdisciplinary approach, exploring these interactions at molecular, cellular, individual, and population levels. Starting with the 'One Health' framework that connects human, animal, and environmental health, this program examines both beneficial and pathogenic microbes including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protists. You'll investigate microbial virulence factors, host immune evasion strategies, tissue damage mechanisms, antimicrobial resistance, and emerging control methods. The curriculum also covers disease patterns and outbreak epidemiology within communities.
