A diverse and captivating nation, Indonesia lies near Australia yet offers countless cultural contrasts. Leveraging our deep connections in Indonesia and with the Indonesian-Australian community, you'll engage with a comprehensive, modern curriculum spanning history, government, physical landscapes, social studies, linguistics, and traditions.

Upon graduation, you'll possess advanced language proficiency, adaptable scholarly capabilities, and in-depth regional expertise. The Indonesian Studies program equips you with both linguistic and analytical skills to utilize Indonesian across various contexts and conduct research using Indonesian sources.

Learners will follow designated pathways outlined in the course unit tables, tailored to their individual language proficiency. Those completing any pathway will earn a major qualification in Indonesian Studies.

Placement in language courses depends on demonstrated ability through Higher School Certificate results (as detailed in the pathway links) or International Baccalaureate scores, supplemented by personal assessments before enrollment. For guidance on selecting the right pathway based on your skill level, consult the Department.

The Advanced Indonesian Studies track is designed for students who achieved 80% or higher in HSC Indonesian Continuers or Extension courses.

From complete beginners to intermediate learners, you'll explore how Indonesia's intricate island geography has shaped its populations and customs within a framework where colonialism and modernization represent just the latest in a series of external influences. Advanced students and heritage speakers can examine contemporary Indonesian society through specialized seminars conducted entirely in Indonesian.
