The Bachelor of Arts honours program serves as both a foundation for graduate studies and the pinnacle of undergraduate education. This intensive year can mark the conclusion of your academic journey while expanding your intellectual horizons, refining research skills, and enhancing analytical and communication abilities. It equips you with the personal and professional competencies necessary to successfully complete a research endeavor. Ideal for undergraduates with a single major, honours also serves as a stepping stone toward academic or professional research careers. The program combines seminar coursework with an independent research project, guided by a faculty expert in your chosen field.
The Cultural Studies honours curriculum includes: an 18,000-20,000 word thesis on a student-designed topic developed with departmental supervision;
Arguing the Point, a course offering thesis research and writing training with practical skill development;
participation in an Honours conference featuring peer feedback on 20-minute thesis presentations; and
a selected seminar from approved 4000-level offerings.
This program enables students to hone their critical thinking through self-directed research on personally meaningful topics.
The thesis represents a significant independent research project on an approved subject, conducted under the guidance of an active researcher. This experience allows students to develop and execute comprehensive research while receiving personalized mentorship to clarify their ideas and findings. The thesis demonstrates the capabilities essential for advanced academic pursuits.
