Jewish Civilization, Thought and Culture examines history, philosophy, literature, religion, ethics, and cultural studies. Delve into two thousand years of Jewish civilization, concentrating on Judaism's historical development and how Jewish identity has been shaped by influential thinkers and historical events. Follow this evolution through times of stability and transformation, including the profound changes experienced by Jewish communities as both independent and dispersed populations.
Discover the vibrant cultural legacy of a small yet impactful group and their notable influence on global culture within both Christian and later Islamic societies. This program highlights three core eras: the Classical period (covering Talmudic and post-Talmudic times in Palestine, the Middle East, and Asia); the Medieval era, focusing on major centers that emerged first in Spain and later in Poland; and the Modern (and contemporary) age, exploring emancipation, modernity's challenges, the Holocaust, Jewish nationalism, and statehood.
All courses are taught in English using English-language materials. While Hebrew study is recommended alongside this program, a foundational understanding of either Classical or Modern Hebrew, or German, is necessary for honors and postgraduate studies.
