This five-year program provides an extensive and adaptable combined degree that certifies you as an accredited social worker while enabling you to supplement your qualification with complementary majors and minors alongside the Bachelor of Social Work. While the program mandates a major or minor in Sociology, or a minor in Social Policy, you can select additional majors or minors in diverse fields like diversity studies, gender studies, Indigenous studies, or philosophy. The curriculum integrates social sciences, social policy, and social work theory and practice, with a strong focus on Australian and international social welfare studies. During the final two years, all students complete the professional social work program, which includes two supervised fieldwork placements in various settings under expert practitioners. The program establishes field education learning goals and cultivates values, skills, and knowledge, progressing students from beginners to practitioners who meet the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) Practice Standards.

Criminology is a multidisciplinary field that incorporates sociology, psychology, science, law, philosophy, cultural studies, and history to explore the social aspects of crime and deviance while evaluating crime control methods. You'll develop an in-depth understanding of criminal behavior, justice systems, deviance, crime causation, victimization, social regulation, youth justice, Indigenous justice, crime prevention, incarceration, and alternative punishments, along with forensic medical-legal practices.

First-year courses establish the groundwork for studying crime, social harm, and the justice system. Second-year units expand your knowledge of criminological theories, concepts, and justice system operations. You'll explore critical discussions about crime concerning youth, race, gender, ethnicity, and Indigenous issues. Additionally, you'll evaluate societal responses to crime through social regulation and justice system practices.

The program emphasizes policing, sentencing, punishment, incarceration, and alternatives like restorative justice. Third-year courses strengthen your analytical skills as you examine the intricate connections between crime, law, medicine, and science. You'll also assess the evolution of criminal justice in relation to "law and order" politics, media influence, culture, and societal impacts. Ultimately, you'll apply your expertise to an independent criminological research project.
