The Master of Museum Studies program covers the historical, theoretical, and practical aspects of museum work. This interdisciplinary degree offers foundational courses alongside diverse elective options across departments and faculties. Students cultivate critical thinking about social, cultural, and political challenges in the field while receiving practical training for professional careers. The curriculum prepares graduates for opportunities in galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAM).
Through collaboration with the University's exceptional museums and collections, along with industry leaders, students experience an enriching environment for museum studies and professional development. The program actively incorporates campus resources like the UQ Art Museum, UQ Anthropology Museum, and R.D. Milns Antiquities Museum, providing firsthand exposure to current museum operations.
The program facilitates professional networking and practical experience through short-term internships or placements, where students complete projects that count toward their academic evaluation. Recent placements have included prestigious institutions like Queensland Art GalleryGOMA, Queensland Museum, Ipswich Art Gallery, and State Library of Queensland, as well as renowned international museums in London, New York, and Tokyo.
Approved degree in the same or similar discipline with a GPA of 5; or
Approved degree in any discipline with a GPA of 5 and have completed two years' full-time (or equivalent) relevant professional work experience (supported by references). This may be work (in roles such as curatorial, research, collections, education, public programs, management, documentation, exhibitions) in museums; galleries; archives or collecting institutions; historic sites or heritage places.
English Proficiency
IELTS overall 6.5; reading 6; writing 6; speaking 6; listening 6. For other English Language Proficiency Tests and Scores approved for UQ TOEFL IBT - Overall 87, listening 19, reading 19, writing 21 and speaking 19. TOEFL PB - Overall 570, listening 54, reading 54, writing 59/5. Pearsons - Overall Score of 64 and 60 in all sub bands. BEP - A minimum overall grade of 4 plus a minimum grade of C in all macro skills. CES - Overall 176 and 169 in all sub bands. OET is not accepted.
