Develop specialized expertise in business and community translation and interpretation through the Graduate Diploma in Arts in Translation and Interpreting.

Select your focus between Chinese-English or Japanese-English language pairs in this intensive one-year program (or part-time equivalent).

The curriculum highlights the integration of digital technology advancements in translation and interpreting, preparing graduates for success in our increasingly interconnected, technology-driven language services industry.

You'll acquire translation competencies including translation memory systems, computer-assisted translation software, machine translation technologies, and post-editing techniques.

For interpreting, you'll develop essential abilities such as memory retention, analytical thinking, effective note-taking, and dialogue interpretation while mastering cross-cultural communication and nonverbal cues.

Qualification Requirements

To be eligible for entry, you'll need: a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in any discipline, or to have completed post-secondary studies, plus 2 years full-time, equivalent relevant work experience (see below), and proficiency in spoken and written Chinese and English for the Chinese field of study, or proficiency in spoken and written Japanese and English for the Japanese field of study. You must have a grade point average (GPA) of 4.5 on a 7-point scale in your previous qualification.

Relevant work experience includes Japanese-English interpreting and translation or Chinese-English interpreting and translation or any other profession where the applicant has built a portfolio demonstrating their oral and written communication expertise in English and Japanese or Chinese. Two referee reports with contact details and CV are required. Applications on the basis of post-secondary study and/or work experience will be individually assessed.
If required, you must have completed an aptitude test to the standard set by the Executive Dean. The aptitude test is not required for native speakers of the language of study (Chinese-Mandarin or Japanese) who reside in a country where the language is spoken (i.e. Mainland China, Taiwan or Japan). The aptitude test may be required for all other applicants, including domestic students. Further information about the aptitude test can be found on the School of Languages and Cultures website .

For other English Language Proficiency Tests and Scores approved for UQ; TOEFL IBT - Overall 87, listening 19, reading 19, writing 21 and speaking 19. TOEFL PB - Overall 570, listening 54, reading 54, writing 59/5. Pearsons - Overall Score of 64 and 60 in all sub bands. BE - A minimum overall grade of 4 plus a minimum grade of C in all macro skills. CES - Overall 176 and 169 in all Sub bands.
