A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a globally recognized postgraduate research degree designed to cultivate independent research capabilities.
Working with a supervisory panel, you'll conduct an in-depth research project, compose an 80,000-word dissertation, and defend it through an oral examination.
This full-time program typically spans 3-4 years, during which you'll refine specialized research expertise in your selected discipline.
The doctoral dissertation represents a significant scholarly work that offers novel insights to your research domain, with potential for alternative presentation formats.
Applicants require robust academic qualifications and may need to provide a detailed research proposal along with supporting documentation. Annually, approximately 1,000 doctoral researchers commence PhD studies at UQ, exploring diverse subject areas.

Master of Philosophy (or another research master’s degree); or
Bachelor’s degree from an approved university with at least honours class IIA or equivalent; or
Coursework master’s degree with an overall grade point average of 5.65 on the 7-point UQ scale which includes relevant research experience, approved by the dean; or
Postgraduate degree (at least one year full-time or equivalent) with an overall grade point average of 5 on the 7-point UQ scale, together with demonstrated research experience equivalent to honours class IIA will be considered on a case-by-case basis; or
Bachelor’s degree plus at least 2 years of relevant research experience, including research publications.

TOEFL (paper-based) 570 5.0 in TWE (written), and 54 in reading & listening
TOEFL iBT (including Paper Edition) - Overall 87, listening 19, reading 19, writing 21 and speaking 19.
