The University of Notre Dame Australia offers a combined Bachelor of Education (Secondary) and Bachelor of Behavioural Science program, equipping graduates to teach students aged 12-17 across Australian Catholic, Independent, and Government schools. This comprehensive five-year dual degree provides flexible full-time or part-time study pathways. The curriculum includes 32 weeks of practical school placements and requires students to select both a Major and Specialisation teaching focus. Aspiring secondary educators will gain thorough preparation through this program, which blends theoretical foundations, modern teaching methodologies, and extensive classroom practice. The structured curriculum develops essential academic competencies for secondary teaching, while students specialize in one primary teaching discipline (such as English, Humanities, Mathematics, Science, or Religious Education) through eight dedicated courses, supplemented by four courses in their chosen specialization.
The Behavioural Science component merges psychological studies with political science, cultural studies, and sociology, creating a unique interdisciplinary approach that bridges conventional psychology with social work principles. This equips graduates with skills to support marginalized or disadvantaged individuals in both educational and broader community contexts. The program's 32-week teaching practicum is carefully structured: beginning with two weeks of classroom observation in the first year; progressing to subject-specific placements in the second and third years; and culminating in a final-year internship that integrates all teaching specializations, including optional Religious Education accreditation components.
