The University of Newcastle's Film, Media and Cultural Studies (FMCS) program provides extensive research opportunities and expert supervision. Students pursuing FMCS PhD or MPhil degrees engage in research that cultivates valuable postgraduate competencies such as: advanced information gathering and analysis, critical evaluation, innovative problem-solving, adaptability, effective verbal and written expression, creative initiative, and professional collaboration. Our program excels in specialized areas including cinematic theory and history; television analysis; media representations of gender and sexuality; philosophical approaches to film; popular music and cultural trends; digital media platforms; audience behavior studies; consumer culture and identity formation; media industry structures; and emerging technologies. FMCS represents a compact yet dynamic research community producing interdisciplinary work spanning sociology, literary studies, historical inquiry, philosophical investigation, and artistic practice. Current scholarly contributions encompass monographs, edited collections, academic journal articles, and various innovative publications.

Qualification Requirements

i) have satisfied all of the requirements for admission to the degree of Bachelor with Honours Class 1 or Honours Class II, Division 1 or any other degree approved for this purpose by the Head of School; or ii) have satisfied all the requirements for admission to a degree of Bachelor in the University or another degree approved for this purpose by the Head of School; or iii) in exceptional cases produce evidence of possessing such other academic or professional qualifications and/or experience as may be approved by the Head of School; or iv) in the disciplines of education, medical physics, nursing, social work, social sciences and surgery have completed a minimum standard of professional experience as required by the Head of School; and IELTS overall minimum - 6.5, IELTS section minimum - 6.0 , TOEFL IBT 79 R: 19 L: 20 S: 20 Writing 24
