The Master of Materials Science and Engineering program provides students with a blend of academic study and hands-on research experience. Leveraging cutting-edge facilities at the University of Newcastle's internationally acclaimed Global Innovative Centre for Advanced Nanomaterials (GICAN), participants will conduct investigations into novel material development, including advanced materials, nanomaterials, functional materials, biomaterials, drug delivery systems, solar cells, soft materials, and high-performance metal alloys.

This degree cultivates future leaders in materials science and engineering, serving not just Australia but also contributing skilled professionals to the worldwide materials sector.
Participants will explore how material fabrication techniques affect microstructure, characteristics, and functionality. They'll apply this expertise to solve complex problems across diverse industries such as education, automotive, personal care products, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas, steel production, electronics, IT, sustainable energy, environmental solutions, failure analysis, and aerospace applications.
Utilize world-class GICAN facilities to concentrate on innovating next-generation materials like advanced nanomaterials, functional substances, biomaterials, pharmaceutical carriers, solar cells, battery/supercapacitor components, catalytic materials, light-responsive compounds, soft matter systems, and specialized metal alloys.

This distinctive curriculum integrates multiple scientific domains including chemistry, condensed matter physics, ceramic engineering, metallurgy, polymer technology, engineering principles, computational methods, life sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, and sustainable energy/environmental solutions.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants with a bachelor’s degree (AQF level 7) in a related Science and/or Engineering discipline area will be assessed by the Faculty.

If admitted into the program, applicants completing the General Pathway may be eligible for up to 40 units of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) reducing the program to 120 units.

Applicants completing the Research Specialization will not be eligible for the 40 units of RPL and must complete the 160-unit program.

Applicants with a Bachelor Honors Degree/Graduate Certificate/Graduate Diploma (AQF Level 8), master’s degree (AQF Level 9) in a related Science and/or Engineering discipline area will be assessed by the Faculty on a case-by-case basis. Exact RPL can only be determined on application.

TOEFL paper-based test score of 550; TOEFL internet based score of 79; IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5; PTE GSE score of 58; Cambridge English: Advanced score of 58.
