The Professional Doctorate in Clinical Research for Optometry is a specialized applied research degree tailored for optometry clinicians and related fields. This program enables participants to integrate doctoral thesis work with coursework from applicable Master's degrees. Completing the DCRO requires submitting a doctoral thesis. Structured as a three-year full-time equivalent (minimum 3 years, typically 4 years), the program consists of one-third coursework (1 year full-time) and two-thirds research (2 years full-time). Students complete 48 UoC of coursework from programs like the Master of Optometry (8073), Master of Public Health (9045), or other qualifying Level 9 AQF courses. Required courses include OPTM7302 Evidence-Based Optometry (6 UOC) and an approved statistics course relevant to the research area (6 UOC). The two-year research phase can be completed part-time or full-time, either at the student's workplace or clinical practice. Like the PhD in Optometry and Vision Science, this research involves independent study under academic supervision, requiring original, meaningful contributions to the field.
