Health, illness, and wellbeing are influenced by factors that extend beyond biomedical explanations and often resist purely medical solutions. Addressing health challenges frequently requires looking beyond healthcare systems - considering elements like social policies, urban planning, community bonds, personal connections, and justice systems, among others. The Social Research specialization within the Master of Public Health program equips students with sociological perspectives on health and trains them in both quantitative epidemiological and qualitative interpretive research methods. This track includes foundational MPH coursework, a distinctive course on sociological public health approaches, two research methodology classes, plus options for electives, projects, internships, or independent studies within the School of Public Health and Community Medicine. Instruction comes from faculty representing diverse fields including sociology, psychology, political science, anthropology, ethnography, and epidemiology.
