Health, illness, and wellbeing are influenced by factors that extend beyond biomedical explanations, with many issues proving resistant to purely medical solutions. Addressing health challenges frequently requires looking beyond healthcare systems - considering elements like social policies, urban planning, community dynamics, interpersonal relationships, and criminal justice systems, among others. The Social Research specialization within the Master of Public Health program equips students with sociological perspectives on health, combining quantitative epidemiological techniques with qualitative interpretive approaches. The curriculum includes fundamental MPH coursework, a distinctive course examining sociological perspectives in public health, two research methods courses, plus options for electives, projects, internships, or independent study within the School of Public Health and Community Medicine. Instruction comes from faculty representing diverse academic disciplines such as sociology, psychology, political science, anthropology, ethnography, and epidemiology.
