Financial Technology (FinTech) represents a fast-evolving sector that leverages technological innovations to improve and transform financial services, often leading to groundbreaking shifts. Prominent examples include digital payment solutions (PayPal, WeChat, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies), automated investment platforms (popular in the US, Europe, and Australia), peer-to-peer lending networks (operating in the US, China, India, and other regions), algorithmic trading (on a global scale), and decentralized finance systems (built upon cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin). Both major financial institutions (BigTech) and emerging startups (FinTech) actively seek skilled professionals in this domain, as FinTech solutions inherently offer scalability and significant potential to reshape financial services. Alongside strengthening students' financial expertise through MFIN coursework, the Financial Technology specialization—developed in collaboration with industry leaders—examines how big data and emerging technologies enable FinTech innovators to divert consumers from conventional financial systems, revolutionizing global practices for raising, transferring, storing, lending, and investing capital. Through the Integrated Learning Laboratory (iLab), students will engage with FinTech applications firsthand: accessing real-time financial data platforms, processing structured and unstructured financial information, understanding financial instruments through Python programming, executing trades using professional brokerage platforms, and learning directly from industry experts.
