The Master of Arts research program serves as foundational training in advanced academic study and investigation. Students develop core research competencies while mastering innovative methodologies. The curriculum may incorporate structured coursework, typically aimed at equipping candidates for their thesis work. Participants must conduct independent research, though the scope and novelty expectations are generally less extensive than doctoral requirements. While fostering creative thinking remains paramount, close faculty guidance is provided during initial problem definition phases and when implementing unfamiliar techniques. The program may include formal coursework which is normally intended to prepare the candidate for work on the thesis. The candidate must undertake an original investigation but this would normally be more limited in scope and degree of originality than is required for a doctorate. Although originality is to be encouraged as much as possible, the work will be closely supervised in the early problem formulation stages and whenever a new technique is being used.
