This program spans four years of full-time study. The first year focuses on foundational science courses that prepare students for the engineering curriculum in Year 2. Year 3 concentrates on core mining engineering principles, while Year 4 delivers specialized training in key areas for aspiring mining engineers. Electives are available during both the third and fourth years. A major component of the final year involves students conducting independent research or a study project in mining or minerals engineering, culminating in a dissertation submission. Post-graduation, mining engineers pursuing operational management roles can acquire additional hands-on experience to earn a Mine Manager's Certificate of Competency in either Coal or Metalliferous Mining. Established pathways exist with the University of Newcastle, allowing qualified students to enter UNSW's program with advanced standing in Year 3.
