The School of Materials Science and Engineering, in collaboration with the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering, presents a combined five-year dual degree program. This curriculum equips students with core undergraduate knowledge in materials science while delivering advanced postgraduate education in biomedical engineering. Graduates earn both a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Materials Science and Engineering and a Master of Biomedical Engineering. The materials science portion examines the composition, characteristics, production methods, and uses of diverse materials - from metals and ceramics to polymers, composites, nanomaterials, and biologically-inspired substances. The biomedical engineering segment utilizes these foundations to address challenges and create solutions across healthcare sectors. Students in this comprehensive program develop both theoretical understanding and hands-on expertise to pioneer advancements in critical areas like life-support systems, prosthetic design, artificial organ development, surgical robotics, medical technology innovation, and advanced drug administration methods. Upon graduation, participants will have acquired versatile capabilities preparing them for professional roles in R&D facilities, medical device manufacturers, pharmaceutical firms, healthcare organizations, government bodies, or educational institutions.
There are several admission pathways to an undergraduate degree at UNSW including high school qualifications, UNSW Foundation Studies, UNSW Diploma, recognised prior study or university transfer.
