The UNE Master of Laws (Research) offers a flexible learning and independent research program designed for outstanding Law graduates to make meaningful and innovative contributions to legal scholarship. Our Master of Laws (Research) is designed to enhance your knowledge and sophisticated research abilities. You'll conduct comprehensive legal research on an important topic, producing either an academic or professional dissertation. The program equips you with theoretical understanding and appropriate research methods for advanced study in specialized legal fields such as corporate law, human rights, international law, or interdisciplinary legal studies. Under expert supervision, you'll complete a substantial thesis as the centerpiece of your studies.

Qualification Requirements

Entry is based on a bachelor qualification with second-class honours or higher qualification in law, or you have a Masters in Law with admission in a legal practice and full-time relevant professional experience.

To be eligible to apply for this course you must meet one of the following entry requirements:

You have completed one of the following qualifications in law (or their overseas equivalents):
Bachelor Honours (AQF Level 8) with a minimum result of second class honours
Master (AQF Level 9)
Doctorate (AQF Level 10)
You have completed an AQF Level 7 or AQF Level 9 qualification in law leading to admission to legal practice and you have a minimum of two years of full-time (or part-time equivalent) relevant professional experience.
Please note: You must also meet the English Language Requirements for all Higher Degree by Research candidates. Please see the Additional Requirements section below for further information.

Eligibility for admission is reviewed by the Head of School or delegate (for example, Higher Degree Research (HDR) Coordinator) under the oversight of the Associate Dean Research (ADR).

An IELTS (Academic) overall score of at least 6.5, with a minimum sub-band of 6.5 for writing and no other sub-band less than 6.0, or TOEFL IBT score of 91 with no less than 22 in writing and no less than 20 in listening, speaking and reading.
