The University of Melbourne's clinical psychology program was established in the 1970s. Its Master of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) degree is widely regarded as one of Australia's top clinical psychology training programs.
This program focuses on developing graduates with comprehensive understanding of mental health disorders, along with advanced competencies in culturally sensitive evaluation and intervention approaches for psychological issues across all age groups.
Training in therapeutic techniques primarily follows a cognitive-behavioural approach, delivered through classroom instruction, individual supervision, and group clinical settings.
The curriculum includes mandatory coursework, hands-on clinical placements, and a research thesis related to clinical psychology. Faculty members maintain active clinical practices and research programs across diverse specialty areas, offering students access to varied clinical training sites and research opportunities.
During their initial year, students evaluate and treat adult clients at the University's Psychology Clinic. The second year involves two specialized placements - one concentrating on child/adolescent care and another focused on adult clinical practice.
