In Australasia, genetic counselors are healthcare professionals who collaborate with clinical geneticists and other medical specialists, frequently as members of interdisciplinary teams that might include additional healthcare providers or scientists. Genetic counseling serves as a communicative approach designed to assist individuals, couples, and families in comprehending and adjusting to the consequences of genetic factors in health conditions. A genetic counselor's responsibilities encompass delivering risk assessments to patients and families, educating individuals, families, and medical professionals about genetic disorders, offering guidance to facilitate informed healthcare choices, and providing emotional support to those affected by hereditary conditions. The Master of Genetic Counseling is a two-year, full-time program with professional accreditation, taught predominantly by active genetic counselors, researchers, and clinical genetics practitioners. The curriculum also benefits from contributions by patient advocacy groups and individuals with personal or familial genetic experiences, who enhance both classroom instruction and practical training components.
