Classics focuses on Ancient Greek and Latin languages, disciplines that have been integral to the University of Melbourne since its inception and central to higher learning for centuries. The Classics curriculum aims to familiarize students with seminal literary works from antiquity (encompassing history, drama, philosophy, epic poetry, and more), revealing how studying these texts in their original languages deepens comprehension of both ancient civilizations and Western heritage. Proficiency in Ancient Greek and Latin also supports research in fields like biochemistry, medicine, archaeology, philosophy, art history, and music. Students pursuing a Classics major can start either language from beginner level (entry point 1) and are advised to study both. Those with VCE qualifications in one classical language begin at entry point 3 while starting the other language at level 1.
