The University of Melbourne's Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program equips you with the skills and adaptability to thrive in diverse veterinary fields, whether as a practitioner for pets or livestock, an agricultural welfare specialist, equine health expert, wildlife conservation officer, or zoo veterinarian.
As a graduate-level qualification, the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine requires applicants to first complete an undergraduate science degree.
After establishing foundational veterinary knowledge, you can specialize through our Tracks initiative, gaining hands-on experience through clinical or research placements across Australia or internationally. The program also offers opportunities to enhance leadership capabilities through concurrent diploma options.
You'll learn from globally recognized academics and engage with cutting-edge, research-driven teaching methods. The curriculum emphasizes communication and collaboration skills, culminating in a fully immersive clinical year that transforms students into competent, empathetic veterinary professionals.

Australia's veterinary workforce of roughly 8,100 professionals primarily operates in small private clinics, often with just one or two veterinarians. Specialization continues to grow, with practices increasingly focusing on specific animal categories. Urban areas employ about half of veterinarians, while rural regions account for over a third. Government agencies hire approximately 14% of practitioners collectively, with others working in pharmaceutical research, animal production, academia, zoos, and welfare organizations. Australian veterinarians frequently participate in global initiatives addressing animal health, disease prevention, and environmental conservation.
