The Doctor of Philosophy in Arts (PhD or Doctorate) represents the most advanced Arts qualification available at the University of Melbourne. Through producing an extensive, original research thesis (80,000-100,000 words) that explores a particular subject, problem, or question, you'll contribute meaningful new insights to your chosen academic discipline. During your research journey, you can access dedicated resources for doctoral candidates, such as academic workshops, 3MT presentation opportunities, and leadership development initiatives. Specialization options span the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (GSHSS) and include the Asia Institute's programs.
A four-year honours degree in a relevant discipline which includes a substantial research component equivalent to at least 25% of one year of full-time study and have achieved a minimum weighted average of 75% in the final year subjects, or (University of Melbourne) equivalent, with a minimum result of 80% for the research component; or A Master’s degree in a relevant discipline which includes a substantial research component, equivalent to at least 25% of one year of full-time study and achieved a minimum weighted average of 75% or (University of Melbourne) equivalent, with a minimum result of 80% for the research component; or A qualification and professional experience which is considered to be equivalent as deemed by the selection committee and Have obtained the endorsement of a prospective supervisor
English language requirements:
IELTS (academic English Only): 7.0 overall, with written 7.0 and no band less than 6.0
TOEFL Internet-based test: 94 + ; Writing 27; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13;
Pearson Test of English Academic: 65 + written communicative skill of 65 and no other communicative skill below 50
Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): 185 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill
