Italian stands among the world's most influential languages, profoundly shaping cultures and other tongues globally. Mastering Italian grants access to diverse fields including history, arts, music, and related languages like French and Spanish. The Italian Studies curriculum aims to equip students with the ability to analyze various Italian-language materials—both written and spoken—and articulate insights through multiple formats. Across all course levels, you'll receive guidance for conducting independent research on topics ranging from linguistics and literature to cinema, theater, gastronomy, migration studies, and cultural identity. Language courses follow a structured progression from Italian 1 to Italian 6 and advanced levels, with placement determined by prior knowledge, assessment tests, prerequisites, or program discretion. Students typically advance sequentially through the courses, though mid-year enrollment into even-numbered subjects is permitted with appropriate qualifications and program approval. Accelerated advancement may be authorized by the Italian Studies program coordinators.
