French stands as one of the globe's most significant international languages, spoken by more than 200 million people across 43 nations on five continents. Proficiency in French can open doors to opportunities in international affairs, development studies, commerce, scientific fields, and creative industries. The French Studies curriculum aims to equip students with the ability to analyze diverse French-language materials—both written and spoken—and articulate their findings through various formats. Throughout all course levels, you'll receive guidance to conduct independent research on topics ranging from linguistics and literature to politics, film, theater, travel narratives, gastronomy, migration, and cultural identity. The French program structures its core subjects sequentially from French 1 to French 7, with placement determined by language background, assessment results, or prerequisite completion. Students typically advance through these courses in numerical order. Mid-year enrollment may be available for even-numbered subjects, pending appropriate qualifications and program approval. Accelerated advancement options exist with authorization from the French program director.
