Pursuing a Master of Laws by Research enables you to gain specialized legal expertise while honing your analytical, research, presentation, and writing abilities. This advanced research program offers an opportunity to explore legal subjects in greater depth than undergraduate studies, fostering critical thinking through enhanced research techniques, written work, and oral communication. You'll engage in academic discussions with faculty and peers, broadening your legal scholarship.

During this Master's program, you'll need to secure an Academic supervisor for your chosen topic. Your research will culminate in a 60,000-word thesis, with your supervisor designing a tailored study plan to support its completion. This may involve taking relevant university courses to strengthen your understanding of the research area, as determined by your supervisor to be essential for your academic progress.

Qualification Requirements

To be eligible for admission as a candidate in the 36 point Master of Laws by Research, an applicant must have: * a Bachelor Degree in Law (AQF level 7), or equivalent; or * a Bachelor Degree in a cognate discipline and satisfy the Graduate Research Manager with evidence of significant scholarly or professional attainments which would indicate a capacity to undertake the requirements of the degree. To be eligible to enter the Masters with advanced standing for the coursework component and be required to complete the thesis only, applicants must have: • a Bachelor Degree with Research Honours (AQF level 8) • a Degree at AQF 8 or above in a cognate discipline and satisfy the Graduate Research Manager with evidence of significant scholarly or professional attainments, which would indicate a capacity to undertake the requirements of the degree.
