Education is frequently viewed as an equalizer for life chances, yet studies reveal it can also perpetuate social disparities and various types of oppression. Designed for professionals in diverse fields (including nonprofits, NGOs, media, politics, activism, and public/private policy sectors) seeking deeper insight into social justice matters, this program enhances your understanding of the intricate—and occasionally conflicting—ways education interacts with inequalities tied to socially constructed differences like race, gender, and socioeconomic status. You'll explore how these factors intersect with each other and with marginalized identities such as those related to sexuality and disability, alongside systemic issues like climate change and colonial histories.
Through examining pressing social challenges and potential solutions, you'll engage with sociological and philosophical research, theories, and social justice practices from Global South, Global North, non-English speaking, and Indigenous viewpoints. Blending these approaches, you'll be encouraged to craft innovative, critical perspectives on how formal, informal, grassroots, institutional, overt, and subtle educational methods can help tackle societal inequities.
