This dual degree merges mechanical engineering with industrial design, shaping you into a product design engineer who blends material science, production processes, and human-focused design with sustainable innovation and aesthetic appeal. You'll acquire deep expertise and refined technical abilities, gaining hands-on experience to craft manufactured products that excel in functionality, ergonomics, visual appeal, and engineering excellence. The program teaches you to approach complex challenges with inventive solutions. You'll hone skills to design diverse products ranging from advanced appliances and furniture to industrial equipment, mobility solutions, medical devices, prosthetics, and robotics. The objective is mastering the creation of thoughtfully designed and expertly engineered products. Upon completion, you'll earn two distinct qualifications: a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours) and a Bachelor of Industrial Design. Monash's faculty—including academics, professional designers, engineers, and leading researchers—will mentor you as you employ design thinking in practical studio settings. You'll also master prototyping techniques to bring concepts to life with functional components and realistic finishes, utilizing cutting-edge resources like 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, thermoforming equipment, and traditional wood/metal workshops. The program culminates in a capstone project where you'll present your work to industry professionals, potential employers, and loved ones.
