The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is an unclassified degree granted for original research that advances knowledge within a specific academic discipline.
This research may enhance scholarly understanding either by uncovering new information or by offering fresh critical perspectives on existing knowledge.
Candidates must produce a thesis of maximum 50,000 words, evaluated by a minimum of two external examiners. The program may incorporate coursework components and research seminar participation.
All faculties offer the MPhil program. Certain fields may require additional research training or completion of preparatory coursework before beginning the research candidature.

Qualification Requirements
The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is a two year equivalent full-time program, awarded for research that demonstrates that the candidate has made a contribution to knowledge in a particular field of study by presenting new facts or by demonstrating an independent critical ability to evaluate existing material in a new light.
The minimum requirement for admission to a MPhil degree is:
- Completion of a Master of Research (MRes) with at least 65% in second year; or
- A two-year Master degree with a major research component at Credit level (65% or greater).
Peer-reviewed research output may be taken into consideration for admission to the program.
You must also demonstrate your suitability for entry to the program by:
- Including a detailed research proposal.
Entry to an MPhil will also be assessed on availability of appropriate supervision and resources.

- IELTS Academic – IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in each band
- TOEFL iBT – 83 (Reading - 13, Writing - 21, Listening - 12, Speaking - 18)
- PTE Academic – 58 with 50 in each band
- C1A – 180 with 169 in each band
- C2P – 180 with 169 in each band
