The Master's by research program challenges you to expand your expertise in your chosen field while honing advanced independent research capabilities. As a research candidate, you'll complete a supervised project resulting in both a creative exhibition and a thesis submission for evaluation.
By the end of your studies, your creative work and written thesis must showcase your comprehensive grasp of complex subject matter across relevant disciplines.
This program develops: Expertise in theoretical frameworks and critical analysis skills, Capacity to evaluate and integrate sophisticated concepts while applying them to existing theories across multiple knowledge domains,
Research Master's graduates in Visual Arts will gain qualifications suitable for academic, educational, professional, and community-based careers. This qualification may also serve as a foundation for specialized postgraduate studies or as preparation for doctoral research.
In order to apply for Master's by research candidature, you will normally require either: a) the satisfactory completion of an Australian Bachelor's degree with an honours year with at least an H2A result in the relevant discipline; OR b) qualification of La Trobe University or a recognised tertiary institution which is deemed by the Board of Graduate Research to be equivalent to the qualification specified in (a) above; OR c) a Bachelor's degree without strengthened by additional qualifications or the demonstrated possession of research skills or publications of an especially meritorious nature, approved by the Board of Graduate Research as an acceptable basis for admission to candidature. Some additional preliminary studies may need to be undertaken.
The following conditions must be met in order to gain admission into a Masters by research degree:
- you must meet the minimum entry requirements for the degree as outlined above
- the department or school in which you seek enrolment must be able to provide appropriate facilities, resources and supervision for your chosen area of research.
English language requirements:
IELTS: Overall 6.5, no band less than 6.0; Pearson Test of English (PTE): Overall score of 56 with no communicative skill score less than 46; TOEFL Internet based (iBT): Overall score of 79 with 13 in Reading, 12 in Listening, 18 in Speaking and 21 in Writing; Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) / Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): 176 with no less than 169 in any component
