The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a globally acknowledged advanced research program. Each doctoral student conducts an extensive, independent investigation into an original subject under faculty guidance, culminating in a thesis submission. This research must offer substantial novel insights and advancements in its field. Students receive guidance from at least two qualified supervisors with proven expertise in the relevant research area, as specified in the Graduate Research Supervision Policy. Academic progress is monitored according to the University's Graduate Research Progress Policy. Students may enroll either full-time or part-time, though visa regulations may apply. The thesis must be completed within four years (or equivalent for part-time study) from enrollment. The La Trobe Graduate Research School oversees all PhD programs.
Prerequisites
In order to be considered for entry, applicants must have completed a Master's by research degree in a relevant discipline completed within the last ten years assessed at a La Trobe Master's by research standard of 70 or above.
An applicant with a Bachelor (Honours), Master's by coursework or ungraded Master's by research degree completed within the last ten years may be eligible for direct entry to the PhD where:
their qualifying degree includes a research thesis of typically 15,000-20,000 words assessed at a La Trobe Master's by research standard of 70 or above; OR
their qualifying degree includes a written research component comprising at least 3/8 of one year of their qualifying degree assessed at a La Trobe Master's by research standard of 70 or above; OR
they are the lead author of a peer-reviewed publication or other research published within the last ten years assessed at a La Trobe Master's by research standard of 70 or above.
Schedule A – Master's by Research Thesis Grading Schema should be referenced in determining whether a Bachelor (Honours), Master's by coursework or ungraded Master's by research degree meets the La Trobe Master's by research standard.
Selection criteria
Schools may specify particular research requirements for entry to graduate research degrees; or may specify how applicants may otherwise demonstrate their equivalence to the academic entry requirements with the approval of the Board of Graduate Research. All discipline-specific requirements will be published in a Schedule to the Graduate Research Admissions Policy.
In addition to the requirements above, the department or school in which you seek enrolment must be able to provide appropriate facilities, resources and supervision for your chosen area of research.
For Joint degrees, where La Trobe University is the host institution, an applicant may be considered for admission on the basis of confirmed candidature at the partner (home) institution.
