As a Japanese studies major, you'll develop proficiency in contemporary Japanese while exploring Japan's society, civilization, and cultural traditions. This program encourages global perspectives through immersive language and cultural studies. Our passionate faculty specialize in diverse fields including educational sociology/anthropology, minority studies, gender issues, Korean communities in Japan, literature, and pop culture. Alumni have pursued careers across education, hospitality, diplomacy, public service, global commerce, publishing, tourism, and translation in both Japan and Australia. With Japanese being a key LOTE subject in Australian schools, we strongly recommend joining our exchange programs (1-2 semesters) at partner universities worldwide. (Note: International programs may be affected by travel limitations.) Courses accommodate all skill levels from beginner to advanced, with placement assessments available to determine appropriate entry points.
