The Aboriginal Studies Major offers students a chance to explore the rich heritage, traditions, and societies of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This interdisciplinary program incorporates fields like history, archaeology, political science, public health, anthropology, media studies, and language sciences. Students will examine subjects centered on Indigenous communities that foster cultural sensitivity, traditional knowledge systems, community growth, and advocacy for social justice.
The curriculum covers diverse elements of Aboriginal cultures, from historical perspectives and linguistic traditions to current political issues affecting Indigenous Australians. You'll explore themes of self-governance and analyze how government policies have shaped Indigenous experiences. This comprehensive approach provides insight into the role of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australian society while teaching community-focused research techniques designed to support Indigenous wellbeing and self-empowerment.
At a minimum, you need to have completed Australian Year 12 (or an accepted international equivalent) with a certain grade. You may also need to meet subject pre-requisites
English language requirement:
IELTS: Overall 6.0, no band less than 6.0; Pearson Test of English (PTE): Overall score of 46 with no communicative skill score less than 46; TOEFL Internet based (iBT): Overall score of 64 with 13 in Reading, 12 in Listening, 18 in Speaking and 21 in Writing; Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) / Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): 169 with no less than 169 in any component
