Kent's Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) program addresses the growing industry demand for skilled professionals. The degree includes an optional Cyber Security specialization within the Bachelor of Information program, created to fulfill the sector's rising need for qualified ICT Security experts. According to a 2018 Australian Department of Industry, Innovation and Science case study titled "Meeting demand for cyber security expertise," AustCyber has highlighted a significant shortage of trained cybersecurity graduates. The report projected Australia would require over 11,000 additional professionals in this field within ten years to satisfy current demand, establishing cybersecurity as a crucial and expanding employment sector.
The BIT program provides outstanding opportunities for students seeking diverse IT career paths. It particularly attracts future ICT professionals by developing practical skills through individual and team-based learning, preparing graduates for positions like analyst programmer, web developer, database administrator, business analyst, software developer, systems analyst, and ICT security specialist in corporate settings.
The BIT curriculum includes 16 core units (6 credit points each), a Capstone Project (12 credit points, counting as 2 units), plus 6 elective units (6 credit points) from business-related fields like management, marketing, or accounting to enhance commercial understanding.
Students opting for the Cyber Security specialization must complete 6 additional Cyber Security units (6 credit points) alongside the standard 16 core units and Capstone Project. They're encouraged to focus their final year Capstone Project on cybersecurity-related topics.
