JCU students gain the unique opportunity to develop data science expertise tailored to tropical, regional, and Indigenous Australian contexts. They benefit from instruction by experienced data scientists, a partnership with SAS that includes certification options, and entry to the SAS Data Science Academy. The program emphasizes applying professional judgment in diverse situations and includes a significant research project. Students create a portfolio through their capstone project to demonstrate their capabilities. Graduates emerge knowledgeable about current trends and challenges in data science, with proficiency in machine learning, data mining, algorithm design, and advanced modeling techniques.
The program provides valuable industry connections, hands-on project experience, and technological literacy to adapt to evolving innovations. Students master the strategic use of programming languages and computational tools for comprehensive data handling - from collection and organization to analysis and visualization.

Completion of an AQF level 7 bachelor degree, or
Five (5) years or more relevant industry experience in IT or data science/data analytics, or
Other qualifications or practical experience recognised by the Dean, College of Science and Engineering as equivalent to the above.
Entry requirements for this course are consistent with the Pathways to Qualifications in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF level 9) Guidelines for Masters degrees.
Mathematics B (or equivalent that includes algebra and elementary differential calculus) together with some background in computing, data analysis or programming is assumed.
Admission based on relevant industry experience must be supported by a detailed CV and proof of work experience (e.g. a letter from an employer detailing the position and job description).
JCU accepts results from many different English language tests, which must be undertaken at an approved testing centre.
From 26 July 2023, TOEFL iBT can no longer be used for Australian visa purposes until future notice from the Department of Home Affairs. JCU continues to accept TOEFL iBT result to meet English language proficiency requirements for admissions purposes. However, it is the student's responsibility to ensure they meet English language requirements for visa purposes, following the advice from the Department of Home Affairs.
