Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) represent a rapidly growing discipline centered on developing, organizing, processing, and utilizing geographic data in all its forms. The Master of Geospatial Information Systems equips students with the expertise to collect, interpret, and oversee location-based data across diverse platforms, ranging from terrestrial and drone-based systems to sophisticated satellite observation technologies.
This two-year program, administered by the College of Science and Engineering, meets the educational standards for accreditation by the Surveying and Spatial Sciences Institute. The curriculum aligns with the 18-unit Graduate Certificate and 36-unit Graduate Diploma in Geospatial Information Systems, with progressively structured coursework allowing students to advance through all three qualifications.
As South Australia's exclusive GIS-focused postgraduate offering, this program merges scientific principles with computer science, data analysis, geography, and cartography. GIS presents a compelling and influential field of study with real-world applications - from employing drone technology to assess conservation sites and leveraging spatial data to combat social inequalities, to shaping sustainable urban development and enhancing quality of life.
Designed for graduates from various academic backgrounds, as well as professionals in government and non-profit sectors, the program delivers both theoretical foundations and practical training in gathering, processing, and presenting geospatial data. Participants will cultivate GIS competencies relevant to multiple domains including environmental conservation, urban planning, human geography, public health, land utilization, natural resource management, ecological services, life sciences, and archaeological studies. Master's graduates will possess the capability to conduct spatial data analysis and produce research findings applicable to numerous GIS implementation areas.
Applicants will normally hold an approved degree or equivalent qualification from an approved tertiary institution. The articulated graduate program in GISc is not available to graduates of the Bachelor of Applied Geographical Information Systems or of equivalent undergraduate courses from other tertiary institutions.
