The postgraduate aquaculture program provides comprehensive training in aquaculture fundamentals across diverse disciplines. Key areas of study encompass aquatic nutrition, water chemistry, breeding techniques, genetic improvement, hatchery operations, ecosystem dynamics, organismal biology, animal care, commercial production, health protocols, pathogen prevention, product standards, farming systems, technological applications, research methodology, biological statistics, fisheries science, business administration, and aquaculture entrepreneurship. Industry leaders from South Australia contribute their knowledge through an advisory panel. Students gain hands-on experience through internships at facilities specializing in tuna, yellowtail kingfish, oysters, abalone, mussels, and freshwater crayfish. Collaborative research initiatives connect Flinders University with PIRSA and SARDI. The curriculum features laboratory sessions, aquarium work, industry expert interactions, and customizable elective options from various academic fields.
Applicants for the graduate diploma must normally hold the Graduate Certificate in Science (Aquaculture) or a degree in any relevant discipline of science or equivalent qualification from an approved tertiary institution.
The Graduate Diploma in Science (Aquaculture) is not available to graduates of the Bachelor of Science (Aquaculture), Bachelor of Science (Aquaculture) (Honours), or equivalent.
