ECU's Medical Science research focuses on key areas including Neuroscience (specializing in Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s disease), Cancer (with a strong focus on Melanoma), Reproductive Biology, and Evolutionary Biology.
Postgraduate research topics are tailored in collaboration with the coordinator or potential supervisor. We especially welcome applications from candidates interested in: Genetic and epigenetic factors in Alzheimer’s disease; Early detection and prevention of Alzheimer’s; Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART); Reproductive health and pregnancy; Blood-based biomarkers for Melanoma and other cancers; Family and intergenerational health; Suboptimal health and glycomics. Current research projects explore genetic influences on Alzheimer’s progression, lifestyle effects on disease prevention, and biomarker studies. Additional work includes developing blood-based diagnostic tools for melanoma and other cancers, as well as biomarkers for type 2 diabetes. Researchers also contribute to the Busselton Healthy Ageing Study, e-health initiatives for dementia, enhancing ART success rates, factors affecting fetal and placental development, grandparent roles in family health, and evolutionary approaches to health and disease. The School features specialized medical science labs and a dedicated neuroscience facility, all equipped with cutting-edge technology.
