The Master of Philosophy program is designed to extend knowledge beyond undergraduate honors or postgraduate diploma qualifications, with a research thesis as its final outcome. After earning this research-based master's degree, you become eligible to apply for admission to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program.
Research-focused advanced degrees stand apart from other postgraduate programs by requiring that research constitutes at least two-thirds of the curriculum. While some coursework may be necessary, the primary focus involves developing a thesis under the mentorship of a supervisor and associate supervisor(s). Examiners must judge your thesis as making a significant original contribution to any field—whether through new discoveries, theoretical developments, or fresh interpretations of existing data and concepts. Additionally, it should showcase your ability to independently plan, execute, and finalize research projects.
