The Master of Philosophy program is designed to extend knowledge beyond undergraduate honors or postgraduate diploma qualifications, with a research thesis as its final outcome. After earning this research-based master's degree, graduates can seek admission to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program.
Research-focused advanced degrees stand apart from other postgraduate programs by requiring that research comprises at least two-thirds of the curriculum. While some coursework may be necessary, the primary focus involves developing a thesis under the supervision of a primary advisor and supporting supervisors. Examiners must judge the thesis to make a significant original contribution to any field, whether through new discoveries, theoretical advancements, or fresh interpretations of existing knowledge. Additionally, it must showcase the candidate's ability to independently plan, execute, and finalize research projects.
