Graduate students can pursue either a PhD (3-4 year program) or an MPhil (2 year degree). Those in the Research School of Biology (RSB) join one of three specialized Graduate Research Fields.
ANU offers outstanding academic programs in evolutionary biology. The Ecology, Evolution and Genetics research initiative spans diverse approaches, offering extensive technical resources and interdisciplinary perspectives. This program encompasses all aspects of ecology (from theoretical to practical, mathematical to observational), evolutionary studies (ranging from population genetics to life-history and behavioral trait evolution), and phylogenetic systematics (including descriptive taxonomy and molecular/morphological phylogenetic analysis).
While most faculty are based in the Research School of Biology, additional expertise comes from the Centre for Resource and Environmental Studies and other ANU departments, along with various CSIRO divisions. Our faculty bring professional experience across multiple domains: animal, plant, and microbial ecology/evolution; behavioral, physiological, and theoretical ecology; conservation biology; molecular evolution; population genetics; plant/animal systematics; information technology; environmental management; geography; and prehistory. Their global experience extends beyond Australia to Europe, Africa, North America, and the Pacific region.
