The Doctor of Medicine and Surgery, Medicinae ac Chirurgiae Doctoranda (MChD), is an AQF Level 9 Extended degree that allows graduates to register as junior doctors. This program cultivates professionals dedicated to ethical, compassionate healthcare and advancing medical understanding. The MChD curriculum revolves around four core themes: Medical sciences, encompassing the broad and evolving foundation of modern medicine; Clinical skills, blending knowledge with patient examination techniques and critical analysis; Population health, examining the interplay between individuals, communities, and their environment; and Professionalism and leadership, fostering essential qualities for exemplary medical practice. The program incorporates key frameworks that investigate medicine's societal roots, deepen awareness of Indigenous health in Australia, and offer exposure to healthcare in rural or remote areas. Aligned with ANU's research-intensive environment, the MChD enhances students' research capabilities and provides high-achieving candidates the chance to undertake a parallel research-oriented degree.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing the MChD, graduates will be equipped to practice safely and efficiently as interns, delivering high-quality care across hospital, general practice, and rural environments. They will demonstrate familiarity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health concerns and possess a grounded understanding of medicine's social dimensions.
