The Earth and Marine Sciences specialization is designed for students with background knowledge in Earth Science, Marine Science, or related fields (such as Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Environmental Science, or Engineering), who wish to pursue an independent research project under faculty supervision. Typically spanning two full-time semesters, this program offers research methodology training, optional instruction in analytical techniques, data science, computational geosciences, and advanced coursework, alongside a significant research component (24-36 units) that results in an Honours thesis. Collectively, these elements prepare graduates for professional opportunities across various industries and government sectors, while also serving as preparation for advanced research degrees like Masters or Ph.D. programs.
Learning Outcomes
Develop and conduct an independent, sustained critical examination of a selected research topic to contribute original knowledge within Earth and Marine Sciences.
Critically assess relevant theories and concepts in Earth and Marine Sciences, connect them to appropriate methodologies and evidence, and formulate valid conclusions.
Exhibit geological and scientific reasoning skills by analyzing, validating, and interpreting concepts from the chosen research field.
