The Earth and Marine Sciences specialization is designed for students with background knowledge in Earth Science, Marine Science, or related fields (such as Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Environmental Science, or Engineering), who wish to pursue an independent research project under faculty supervision. Typically spanning two full-time semesters, this program offers research methodology training, optional instruction in analytical techniques, data science, computational geosciences, and advanced coursework, alongside a significant research component (24-36 units) that culminates in an Honours thesis. Together, these elements prepare students for professional careers in various industry and government sectors, as well as provide a foundation for further academic research at the Masters or Ph.D. level.
Learning Outcomes
Develop and conduct an independent, sustained critical examination of a selected research topic to contribute new knowledge in Earth and Marine Sciences.
Critically assess relevant theories and concepts in Earth and Marine Sciences, connect them to appropriate methodologies and evidence, and derive valid conclusions.
Exhibit geological and scientific reasoning skills by analyzing, validating, and explaining concepts within the chosen research field.
Clearly and effectively communicate and defend complex ideas and findings to diverse audiences.
